Chapter 10

The vampires shrieked as they turned and ran toward the man who had held them captive. A wall of flames rose up around the collector, setting a few of the enraged vampires on fire before they realized what was happening. Screams carried on the cold wind, accompanied by the stench of burning hair and flesh.

The other vampires glanced at each other and paced around the perimeter of the flames, angry and confused, like wounded animals.

"Yo!" Drake shouted, his deep voice carrying, bringing with it a force of command I'd never heard from him. "To me, guys."

I gaped as a couple dozen strange vampires turned and headed our way like Drake was their vampire God.

The madman in the middle of the flames was cackling in glee. "Oh, look at him! That's so cool. And he sounds like a kid. Very millennial."

"What the hell is going on here?" Drake demanded of the nearest vampire. She was a tall, dark-skinned woman wearing cammo pants and a tight, long-sleeved black jacket. Her brown hair was scraggly, and her skin was ashy, like she had spent quite a while dirty and malnourished. Brown eyes ringed in bloodred flared with inner power and she growled out an answer almost involuntarily, responding to Drake's aura. Apparently, this was what he meant when he said he should be a master vampire. His power and his mere presence seemed to stun the others of his kind.

"We came for Andrei," the woman spat. "But that psychopath is unlike anything I've ever seen. He collects magic. Uses it like it's his own. He has compulsion spells that work on vampires. We couldn't fight it." She shrugged. "Next thing I know I'm awake again. Are you…the halfbreed heir?" her voice held a hint of awe.

Drake narrowed his silvery eyes at her. "He can cast that compulsion on you again?" he asked, ignoring her question. The other vampires were gathered behind her, their eyes bouncing between their apparent leader and Drake.

She nodded. "Whenever he feels like it. He's just fucking with you right now. We need to get out of here."

Drake glanced at me for direction while the vampire woman shifted from foot to foot. "I can make them stay, if you want."

The woman tensed, her eyes going wide.

I sighed. "If he can just use them against us, we might as well let them go."

The woman bowed formally to me. "Thank you. Necromancer. You should leave as well. The last thing he needs is your power at his disposal."

Then she was gone in a blur, the others darting after her into to the woods, away from the clearing.

The flames surrounding the crazy guy died down and he held his arms out to the side, grinning like a clown. "Oh, you let my pets get loose. You're no fun at all." He shrugged. "But I like this vampire better anyway."

He clapped his hands together and turned his attention to the sorcerers. "Well, what are you waiting for? Bring my necromancer over here into the circle and we'll be on our way.
